Hello patients,

Chris and I wanted to address you all directly about changes in the clinic and our efforts to keep each other healthy. First, we want to go over some facts and misinformation regarding the virus and then we'll go over how our changed procedure may impact you.

As you know Covid-19 is a virus. All of you are familiar with viruses and we are sure we have treated many of you for one in the past. What is a little different about this one is its ability to attack lung tissue. Like all viruses, the ones most at risk are those who have an impaired immune system. That means anyone with a chronic disease like rheumatoid arthritis or diabetes. It also means the elderly. None of us like to think of ourselves as elderly so let's say anyone over 60. Risk increases with age. This is why we say over 55 get a flu vaccine or a shingles vaccine. There is no treatment or vaccine...yet. That is why we are focusing on prevention.

The virus can live on a metal surface for hours and is spread by respiratory droplets. So if you use a touch pad or touch a door use hand sanitizer. When you get home, wash your hands. Before you leave, wash your hands. If you come to our office, wash your hands. If you are sick you may need to stay home or wear a mask to keep your droplets from landing on surfaces and infecting other. Not everyone needs to wear a mask. People who are sick or those caring for sick people should. The rest of us should stay away from large gatherings, use hand sanitizer and wash our hands with soap.

Let's look at some things that will not help you. Drinking hot drinks does not kill the virus. Drinking a lot of water is a good idea because you are hydrated but does not keep you from getting the virus. And lastly, breathing deeply and holding your breath does not tell you if you are ill. If you think you are sick, call our office.

Effective immediately, we will be asking all patients about their symptoms and contact history. Based on the phone triage you may be 1) told to go to a testing site. At this time that is the health department but that may change. 2) given an appointment at our office or 3) offered an online visit with one of us. We are not yet able to offer that but are looking into it and hope to offer it very soon. This will allow those of you at risk to stay out of the office and some of you sicker ones to stay at home.

We have always wiped down surfaces after each visit and during the day. We will continue to do this. We also have removed all magazines and children's toys from the office. Consider bringing something to entertain yourself and your young ones. We will now have 2 waiting rooms. Immediately inside the front door will be the well waiting room. The original waiting room will be for sick people and we are asking sick people to enter from the back of the clinic. That way we can keep you sick ones well away from you healthy ones. If you are sick and prefer to wait in your car that is also okay. We will be screening patients by phone when you call to make an appointment and when we confirm your appointment the day before you are expected. If you are sick check in with Carrie by phone or let us know you are here by coming in the back.

Please be patient with us as we try to care for all of you. We realize change is confusing and may be inconvenient. However, we know you all. Most of you we know very well and we know you will be considerate of each other and with us.

The last thing we want to say is there is a lot of anxiety out there and some of us have been struggling with that since the hurricane. We want you to remember that you are not in this alone. We care about you and care for you. Most of the things we fear never come to pass and even if they do they are rarely as bad as we feared. If we all look out for each other we can't help but get through this. And lastly, know that we are praying for you, for your families and for the clinic.
